Children are living evidence of our union with another human being. Although few future parents view it that way, the drive to reproduce is also a powerful, biological one.
It is why many couples, after years of trying, feel a bit helpless and cheated. Why is this simple hope of procreation eluding us, they ask.
Sometimes, there are medical reasons. But in 20 per cent of couples, everything appears normal.
The ethos many live by nowadays - if I work hard enough, I will get what I want - does not seem to apply when it comes to fertility. It is a humbling reality to live with.
As much as technology has advanced, the “bring home baby” rate still hovers around 30 per cent, even in the best IVF centres. Over the years, the results have improved, but it is still nowhere near where we’d like it to be.
